Our Cattle

All of our cattle are gentle creatures with a docile temperament and cause minimum damage to the grasslands where they perform excellently, producing beautifully marbled and succulent meat.

Our beef comes from our pedigree herd of Angus and Hereford cattle. These breeds are well known for its superior quality beef, suitability for grass feeding on hilly pastures as well as high yields through faster daily weight gain at less cost through efficient conversion of feed to muscle instead of fat, producing wonderfully succulent and tender meat.

ANGUS

The Angus breed is a distinctive breed developed in the 19th century. They are well-loved for consistently fine beef with an even fat coverage and perfect marbling makes the taste and texture rich, moist and succulent. Many herald it as the best beef in the world.

The breed is widely recognized globally, with several countries having their own specific Angus breeds.

HEREFORD

The Hereford breed of cattle have stood the test of time for well over 200 years. Herefords will lay down an even layer of fat on top of their naturally well-developed muscle which allows the finisher to select the ideal grade at which to slaughter.

Herefords can be successfully finished on grass alone and are renowned for their succulence and flavour and their unique ability to produce top quality beef naturally from grass.

Our Sheep

New Zealand is world renowned for the production of lamb. Ti Maunga's lamb is hand-picked from our flocks of Coopworth and Suffolk sheep and are raised free range for the whole of their life.

Ti Maunga sheep are reared on nothing but the best New Zealand pasture and natural forage diet, supplemented with hay or root crops when grass is in short supply. All of this ensures our lamb is succulent, tender and healthy.

COOPWORTH

The Coopworth sheep breed was named after Ian Coop, who with a team of scientists at Lincoln University in Canterbury, New Zealand developed the breed to increase lambing percentages of Romney ewes when mated with Border Leicester rams. Coopworth sheep are a medium sized, dual purpose meat and wool breed, well suited to flat and hill pastoral farms in New Zealand.

Coopworths were bred for productivity – fertility, lamb growth rates and wool quality. The ewes lamb easily and very few have to be assisted as there is little or no bearing trouble. In addition, the Coopworth are excellent mothers - Coopworth ewes have a highly developed maternal instinct and does not run off when disturbed. Its milk production is very good which this makes for a higher lamb survival rate and strong, well-fed lambs.

SUFFOLK

The Suffolk is renowned as a terminal sire breed (ideal for meat production) with the ability to grow and finish quickly or be taken to heavier carcass weights, if required. Suffolk are a large breed of sheep with white wool and a black face.

The lamb produced when a Coopworth is crossed with a Suffolk ram is considered ideal for meat production, since they have unusually good conformation and are well fleshed. The lamb has the easy-care benefits and excellent growth rates.
